10 Nursery and Baby Bedding Tips

1.) Before shopping for your baby bedding for you baby’s nursery, it might help to review some of the crib bedding and nursery basics. For the first few months of your son or daughter’s life, they will spend most of the day sleeping. Most babies sleep about 16 to 18 hours out of every 24. Your baby will wake up every two to four hours to be fed. Between one month at two years of age, a baby’s total sleep time gradually decreases, from an average of 15 hours down to approximately 13 hours per day. In other words, you and your baby will spend a lot of time in the nursery. The baby bedding you choose will be the center piece of your baby nursery. Even the youngest of infants have individual sleeping needs. They sleep when they want, and there’s not much we can do to make them fall asleep or to wake them from that cycle. That said, most babies will sleep best in a darkened, quiet room. Baby crib bedding needs to be comfortable. Although you might find it convenient to keep a nightlight on, so you can see what you’re doing when you go into the room, the baby is fine sleeping in the dark and, in fact, they sleep better without lights on at all. Little ones don’t become afraid of the dark until two or three years of age, that’s when they begin to be able to think about it.

2.) A thick baby bedding bumper will help dampen the sounds that reach your baby. Try to keep the baby’s environment as quiet as possible. It’s a good idea to try and buffer sudden, loud noises that may wake your baby. Some ideas are to keep a radio on in the baby’s room turned to a place where there is just static and turn the volume down low enough to create background noise. Tapes and CD’s are available that provide background nature sounds, such as constant breaking of waves or a stream running over rocks. However, it’s not a good idea to tip toe around the house while your baby is sleeping, he/she will adjust to the normal sounds and noises of every day family living. A thick baby bedding or crib bedding bumper will help damper sound that reach your baby.

3.) There are several ways for you to arrange your newborn’s sleeping environment, for example, a bassinet, a cradle, a crib, or even the family bed can be used. Some parents choose to sleep with their baby in their bed for the first few weeks. This is a controversial practice. Some experts claimed that co-sleeping increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), others say the evidence is weak for such a link, and still others argue that co-sleeping actually reduces the risk of SIDS. If you are considering co-sleeping, it’s a good idea to discuss this with your pediatrician. If you decide to have the baby share the bed on a conventional mattress, never on a waterbed, check with the American Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Institute for safety precautions.

4.) Even when parents choose to co-sleeping for a few weeks or months with their new baby, they usually choose to move the baby out of the family bed sooner or later and into their own baby crib with its beautiful baby bedding or crib bedding. Whenever or not you decide to do this, it’s very important to have a good sturdy well-made crib and mattress ready at waiting. You should allow plenty of time, usually 8 to 12 weeks for the crib and baby bedding or crib bedding to be delivered. Pretty details and decorations of your crib bedding or baby bedding are fine, but your newborn won’t notice them for the first few months. At first it is more for the mother’s enjoyment. For the time being, his or her instincts are to sleep. Don’t forget to take pictures of you sweet baby sleeping in his or her baby bedding or crib bedding.

5.) It is a good idea to think about your baby bedding and baby nursery before you start working on any particular item. You should be taking about your baby’s sleeping arrangements before he or she arrives. Here are some things you can do to help you with your decision. The first thing is to decide on the type of bed. Bassinets and cradles can be used only for a few months of infancy. Cribs are usually used until a child is between two and three years old. According to the Sleep Product Safety Council, once a child is 35 inches tall, she should make the transition from crib to bed. If you choose to purchase a new crib, consider whether you plan to have more children who could use it later. If you will not, what will you do with the crib when your child graduates to a bed? Have you considered a convertible crib. Unless you have specific plans that make the investment in a crib worthwhile, it may be more cost-effective to consider purchasing a convertible crib that will be used by your child for years.

6.) The mattress is an important part of your baby’s sleeping environment. The difference between a least expensive mattress product and the top-of-the-line innerspring mattress can be as little as $60. If you are all on a tight budget, this is not where you should try to save money. Remember, important developmental things are occurring during your baby sleep. If the crib or bassinet is a hand me down, make sure that it conforms to the current safety standards. A new crib must be manufactured according to those standards. Whether the crib is new or used, review the recommendations to prevent smothering, overheating, and the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Check the fit of the mattress, it should be snug against the crib. No more than two fingers width between the mattress and the side of the crib is recommended. The right mattress will also make you baby bedding or crib bedding look nicer.

7.) For the first few months of a baby’s life, many parents choose to have him or her sleep in a bassinet, a relatively light, woven basket in a stand. If the idea of a bassinet is appealing, choose one that can be lifted easily out of the stand for easy transportation from room to room or outdoors on a nice day. The bassinet can be left in the bedroom or can be moved into the parent’s room during the night, making nighttime feedings more convenient. Because the bassinet is only suitable for the first few months, consider not spending too much for it. However, it is always recommended to buy a new mattress, which should be a good fit, and fit snugly. As mentioned above, the right size mattress will make your baby bedding or crib bedding look right. Another option is a cradle. The cradle which looks like a hybrid between a small crib and a rocking chair, is another small bed alternative to a crib for infants. They usually are made of wood and measure roughly 18 by 36 inches. The side to side motion of a cradle is soothing to babies, which maybe one of the reasons that many families have air loom cradles passed down from generation to generation. A baby can usually sleep in a cradle for approximately the first four months. Again, a new mattress is a must. It should be firm at least two inches thick. Cribs are the most common bed used by infants. There are a lot more choices in baby bedding or crib bedding than any other bedding types. Even if a newborn’s first months are spent in a bassinet or a cradle, she or he eventually will spend most of her or his sleep time in the crib. Cribs come in a large variety of styles, dimensions, and finishes, and your choice should be based on how the crib will help to create the overall look of the room. For this reason, you should decide on your basic room décor before choosing a crib. In addition, you may want to think long-term and take a look at cribs that convert to a small bed, also called youth beds, and later, as your child grows, even a twin or full-size bed. Although not a requirement, and not found in some new cribs with solid end panels, try to find a crib with slats for bumper ties. When shopping for cribs look for these slats because it makes installation of bumpers much easier. When your bumper is secured tightly, your baby bedding or crib bedding will look better as well.

8.) Here are some ideas to think about when looking at cribs. A crib should be sturdy and properly assembled, and should meet current safety standards. This is a simple matter with a new crib. It should carry a safety certification seal for the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, (JPMA), which insures that the crib meets national standards. However, an heirloom piece that has been in the family for years or that wonderful antique you bought at an auction requires some careful scrutiny and may not be safe to use for your baby’s sleeping needs. However, those items can be put to use as decorative pieces to add to the beauty of your baby’s room. To determine whether an old or vintage crib is serviceable, make sure that the headboard and footboard have no decorative cutouts and that the crib has no quarter post extensions. Slat should be spaced no more than 2 3/8 inches apart, which is about the diameter of a can of soda. Check for loose parts or missing pieces. If the crib is painted, consider whether lead-based paint might have been used, if in doubt, a complete stripping and refinishing job is in order. Whether the crib is vintage or not, it should always be inspected. The Consumer Product Safety Commission advises that mattresses should fit snugly so that the baby cannot become trapped between the mattress and the frame. If you can fit two fingers between the mattress and the side of the crib, the mattress is too small. To properly support the baby’s growing body, and to prevent smothering, mattresses should be firm. Two types of crib mattresses are available, foam and innerspring. Foam mattresses are light and relatively inexpensive, these mattresses are made up of polyester or polyether. They come in a variety of thicknesses and densities. The best quality, longest wearing foam mattress you can buy has a high-density that is roughly one pound per cubic foot. Innerspring mattresses are also known as coiled mattresses, and tend to maintain their shape over the long-term better than most foam mattresses. This is important because your child will be sleeping on it for at least two years. Innerspring mattresses for twin, full, queen, and king-size bed’s, those made for cribs, all contain several factors to consider, such as the number of turns per coil and the temper for the wire used to make coils. The most important factor, however, it is the number of coils. For crib mattresses, the ideal minimum of coils is 150. If you know the type of look you want in your baby bedding or crib bedding it will be easier to pick the correct color of a crib.

9.) The baby bedding or crib bedding will be the center piece of your baby nursery decor. However, soft, beautiful blankets, comforters, sheets, or pillows should not be placed in the crib with your baby. These items pose a risk for smothering and are for decoration only. In addition, overheating has been associated with an increased risk of sudden if infant death syndrome. Furthermore, rebreathing exhaled carbon dioxide has been linked with sudden infant death syndrome. This is one reason that babies should always be placed all their backs rather than on theirs stomachs to sleep. When putting the baby in the crib, remove pillows and heavy blankets, and always make sure he or she has plenty of room for fresh air to circulate around his or her body. To keep the baby warm, dress her him in a snugly sleeper, an example is a so-called wearable blanket. In additional you could us a covering, like a small thin blanket. Whatever you use, make sure that it is safe. A beautiful baby bedding or crib bedding can be the most beautiful item in your nursery, just make sure that the decorative items that could pose a risk to your baby are not on the inside of the crib when you baby is in it.

10.) The following is additional helpful information about baby bedding or crib bedding. The best fabrics for baby bedding or crib bedding are tight weave cotton or cotton blends. Consult the Consumer Product Safety Commission to find out which fabrics should and should not be used. The issue of proper ties on baby bedding or crib bedding should be another area of concern for parents. Some efforts were made several years ago to mandate a standard size for the straps on baby bedding or crib bedding that attach bumpers securely to the crib. The Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association determined that the safest size for straps is between seven and nine inches. The minimum size, seven inches, maybe too short to fit around the rails or posts in some cribs, but nine inches will work for most, keeping the bumper securely fastened to the crib and preventing the baby bedding or crib bedding bumpers from flopping around the crib. This is a voluntary standard adhered to buy some manufacturers, but it is up to the consumer to purchase and use baby bedding or crib beddings that meet these requirements. The safest baby bedding or crib bedding bumpers have ties for the four corners on the crib, and on both the top of the bottom of the bumpers.
